Hi Everyone! I’m Margo from Creating In The Gap…I’m a pattern addict and fabric hoarder extraordinaire! I am so excited to be a part of the Blank Slate Sewing team this year!! I’m new to Blank Slate patterns and so far…I’m won over. When Melly gave me the theme of prints for my first make, I did the most uncool fist pump you’ve ever seen! I have lots of flowy prints in my stash so I knew immediately that the Auberley Dress would make a great late summer maxi.
The Auberley details:
- Lined bodice with notched neckline
- Long bell sleeves or elbow-length straight sleeves
- Tunic, knee, and maxi lengths
- Princess seams with waist ties
- No zippers or buttons
- Side seam pockets
- Sizes 0-26 (bust 32-53 inches)
I decided to make a sleeveless maxi and Melly’s tutorial is a great one. I love that this dress doesn’t need any closures! The sleeveless tutorial does show how to include a zipper, but I skipped it because there is lots of room for it to slip on and off easily without it.
This dress is rated as an advanced beginner pattern and I think that this assessment is spot on. Perfect for beginner who wants a bit more challenge or for an advanced sewer who wants an easier project.
One thing that I love about these patterns is that the directions give the page numbers for printing the size range you want, as well as the option to print the skirt portion or cut it according to the measurements given for your size. I opted to cut the skirt out according to the measurements…really easy because you’re just cutting out two rectangles.
The instructions also include full bust/small bust adjustment instructions, how to change the position of bust point, and how to lengthen and shorten bodice. Lots of help to customize it to your body!
Because this was my first Blank Slate pattern, I decided to go ahead and make it as is… to test out the fit for me. It’s a pretty good fit. For my next one, I will lengthen the bodice by about 3/4 inch because I feel like the waist is a little high on me.
When I first put this dress on, I have to admit that I wasn’t thrilled but after wearing it for a day and seeing the pictures….I love it. It is a really easy to wear and comfortable dress.
The shorter version with sleeves would make a great dress for fall too!
