Bookworm Button Up with Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy – Blank Slate Sewing Team

After several weeks of women’s sewing patterns being featured, Stacey is back with some boy sewing today – enjoy!

I've had a denim shirt on the sewing list for the boys for ages.  It's a class shirt that can be styled in so many different ways.  Pair it with jeans for a "Cool Hand Luke" feel or dress it up with a pair of chinos to bring out the preppy boy.  Either way, your little one will be bringing style to the playground.

The pattern itself has so many different options, both for boys and girls (can you say bow embellished pockets?), that you could sew this button up in an infinite amount of ways.  The first time I sewed this pattern, I modified the short sleeve version of the pattern to create a fun bowling shirt. This time around, I kept to the basic pattern with the pleated pockets option and went with crisp, white top stitching.

I used a heavyweight, dark stretch denim to sew up this 5T shirt.  I like the looser fit of this shirt as it will allow him to wear an extra layer underneath during these cold months.  A shirt like this is made for showing off your top stitching skills!  Between the pockets, button plackets, collar and cuffs, a girl could go crazy-wild, top stitching all the things. I did throw in a little pop of color with this fun black and turquoise plaid for the outside collar stay and the inside yoke.  The fully lined yoke provides another fun place to play with patterns and color. I tend to lean toward classic colors and fabrics for the boys clothing staples but I have plans for a contrast yoke version in the future. Or a contrast collar and cuffs!

If you've never sewn a button up shirt, no need to worry.  Melissa's pattern instructions are perfectly clear and easy to follow, making even a tricky sleeve placket, a piece of cake. Or, skip the sleeve plackets and go for the short sleeve option for a quick sew.  Either way, you're sure to have a  shirt your little one will be proud to wear.
