Hello again! I’m Ren Murphy of The Inspired Wren where I share inspired sewing, crochet, and crafts. Today I’m here to share a bright, Spring-ready version of Blank Slate Pattern’s Coastal Cargos.
I pulled this combination of fabrics after weeks of sewing with a dark palette and in the middle of a serious cold-snap for the mid-Atlantic region (20F). Clearly my eyes were longing for Spring sun and colorful warmth. The pants are sewn in a textured cotton with the splashes of color that give the effect of a painter’s pants. I love it!

The six (6!) pockets on these pants came together breezily. Only my second time ever sewing welt pockets and not a glitch or seam-ripper to be seen. It was also my very first time sewing a true zip fly. I had a small panic when I realized: I volunteered for this?! Then I dove-in one step at a time and it rocked! My very first every zip fly pants. YAY!
I altered the pants for fit; they are 4T wide with one and a half inches added in length. It’s so nice to be able to be able to sew pants custom-fit to actually stay up! I cut and spread the pattern below the knee (at the 3T cut line to be specific) to add the length. To adjust for the additional length, I also moved the Button Tabs down about an inch and a half, but sewed the side buttons just above the stitched square, instead of on the square as directed.
Speaking of buttons, how perfect is that waistband button for this fabric? Squared off and warm-toned just like the splashes of color. Love it. I topped the pants with a self-drafted tee in a matching coral and she’s ready to go play outside! Just as soon as it warms up.
