Today we have fellow Austinite seamstress Dixie sharing her Juniper Jersey. I love her mix of fabrics here…hope it gives you some ideas!
Hey everybody! I'm pretty stoked finally get to share my first make for the Blank Slate Sewing Team! I chose the Juniper Jersey because it offered the opportunity to mix and match fabrics - especially scraps. Plus, a girl can always use more t-shirts in her wardrobe, right?
After printing and assembling my pattern I cut out a size small and it fits great. The yellow fabric is a double-knit? Honestly, I don't remember. It's leftover bits from a long ago project. Luckily my scrap pieces were big enough to squeeze out the body of this shirt. So this pattern is also great for stash busting!
The white lacy top is some sort of franken-fiber stretchy stuff I bought a long time ago, loved, but haven't had the chance to use until now. I loved the lace effect but I was concerned it wouldn't hold the weight of the yellow knit. Turns out the lace has a good recovery and it works just fine.
I serged all the seams which was good considering the negative space in the lace would have made it difficult to sew just on a regular machine.
In the end I left the sleeve hems raw. At first I tried turning the raw edge under twice and hemming but it the lace created a lumpy mess so I just chopped it off. rather than try to unpick my stitches. This fabric doesn't fray but I'm not sure if I want to keep it like this or add a folded over binding like on the neckline.
If you've never sewn a V-neck before then this is a good way to start. With the shoulder yoke it's like a "cheater" v-neck, super easy to make. In fact this whole shirt is easy to make, and fast! I cut it out and stitched it up in only a couple hours. Thanks for checking out my shirt, now go make a Juniper Jersey for yourself!
