Hello, I’m Melizza from Pincushion Treats. I haven’t been blogging there recently but I am super active on Instagram. I’m well excited to share my Blank Slate Marigold peplum top and cardigan hack. So much so that I have three Marigold looks to share.
When I considered what fabrics to use for the peplum top, I couldn’t get away from jewel tones. To me, they scream autumn. They are so rich, vibrant. A lot like the season. And so great with neutrals. I initially picked a deep red mysterious woven fabric from my stash. I barely squeaked out a peplum top. After being two-thirds done I accidentally ripped a hole in the bodice. Goodbye, dark red Marigold. It was nice while it lasted.
I considered making it again in a print but I wasn’t sold. Then I remembered a gorgeous wool crepe a friend recently gifted me. Again, barely enough to squeak out a peplum top. Am I crazy to take the chance of possibly messing up again? Yes! Look at that tone! It’s gorgeous.
Thankfully it went well. I went with no sleeves so I can easily layer it for the fall and spring.
Before I added the snaps, I realized I loved the look of Marigold without any fastenings. It looks blousy and chic with a tank underneath. Time to make another one…
Finally, as I was fitting the top (I did a 2 inch FBA and 1 inch broad back adjustment), I kept thinking how fabulous the shape would look as a cardigan. So I traced the bodice pieces, eliminated the gathers, and drafted kimono sleeves. I used a stable knit, allowing for the cardigan to have a bit of body.
I really enjoyed fitting and sewing my Marigold top. It proved to be super versatile. I’m looking forward to layering it up for fall and seeing what various looks I can make.
