Hello again. It’s me, Melissa from a happy stitch. I’m thrilled to be back here and sharing my Oceanside shorts! I made these from Melly’s Oceanside Pants pattern, which means I also have the option of making lovely pants, too.
I know. Shorts?! What am I Australian? In fact I am not. Where I live, the ground is frozen and I need a jacket that is the equivalent of sleeping bag with arms to leave the house. But, those silly details aren’t going to stop me from showing off my shorts (and by proxy, my glow-in-the-dark Scandinavian legs. Hello). This act of foolish bravery is inspired by our family’s upcoming Spring Break trip to a tropical location. I couldn’t be more excited.
As much as I am excited, I’m also seriously crunched for time. That’s why I jumped at the chance to make these shorts. They are so quick to make. The pattern is only two pieces (not including the pockets, which are simple patch pockets). If you have the fabric on hand, you can seriously make these faster than it would take to go out and buy some.
I decided to make mine in an olive lightweight canvas that I picked up somewhere, it was so long ago I don’t remember. They are pretty standard shorts, though they do rest low on the waist…at what I think would be called ‘boyfriend jean’ height. I wanted a very basic pair but I’m also thinking these would look so good in a nice fun ikat fabric.
Either way, they are sure to get lots of wear and if I need to whip up a few more pairs before we head out on vacation, I can!
