Today we’re hearing from another Melissa, new sewing team member from A Happy Stitch who shows off why the Pocket Full of Posies dress is perfect for so many body types.
Hey everyone! I'm Melissa Q. from a happy stitch and I'm so excited to be on the Blank Slate Pattern team!
I surprised myself when I decided to stitch up this Pocket Full of Posies Dress from Blank Slate. It looks so adorable but I couldn't help but worry, "Really? Isn't a knit dress with hip pockets going to emphasize my already-substantial hippage?" "It looks amazing on the model but will it look frumpy on me?" It just looked so darn cute and sexy that I threw my worries to the side and took a leap of faith. I've been struggling to find fresh, modern garments I could sew for myself and this dress looked perfect. I couldn't resist, it was calling my name. And, I'm so glad I did!
It's the details that makes this dress so dazzlingly fantastic and elevate it to va-va-voom. For one, the neckline is perfection...not too low but low enough to give the dress a great shape. The hemband at the bottom is substantial enough to give the dress weight and rein in volume at the hips both by controlling the drape and giving it shape. The length of this dress is also spot on. It's long enough to be everyday wearable but not so long that it loses it's oomph. I think all these details are the secret sauce that keep it looking elegant instead of frumpy.
The best thing and really the most important for the life of a mom like me is that is so darn comfortable!! Ha ha ha ha! Nothing is better than a sexy, comfortable, everyday dress! Armed with that I am ready for anything.
For my fabric I used a knit interlock fabric from Jo-Anns. It's thicker than a four-way stretch knit, which makes it a little warmer and more substantial. It's super soft, too. Going to be the perfect piece for the transition into fall. I'm sure it will look great with leggings as well. Yay for the marriage of comfort and cool.
