Hi Everyone! I’m so happy to be back, both here at Melly Sews and to be back at sewing!! I’ve taken a bit of a break and it feels good to return. To ease myself back in, I decided to make the Tulip Top. (aff link) It was a quick and easy make that made it perfect for getting my sewjo back!
If you follow me on my blog, you already know that I love dresses and skirts but let’s face it…. when winter is here, you’ll often find me wearing my jeans and a comfortable top. That being said….I still like to dress up and I decided that this top could be both casual and a bit dressy. So I made two…
The first one I made from this pretty blue quilted sweatshirt fabric. It is cozy and perfect for chilly winter days. I didn’t have a rib knit close enough in color to match the blue so I decided to try using the same fabric. It had enough stretch that it worked out great!
For my second version, I made it in black rayon medium knit. I have quite a bit of this in my stash but I’ve been hesitant to use it because I love it so much. I’m really pleased with how well it turned out!
Black makes it dressier already but I added a little more flair by putting a layer of lace in that peeks out on one side. I love this little surprise peeking out from underneath the top layer! The lace I used has a nicely finished edge that I wanted to use but I couldn’t cut it to follow the curve of the hem so instead, I cut out the underneath layer straight across.
It works, but the fit could be a bit better across the lower back. I should have cut and spread the pattern piece to allow for a bit more ease. Other than that though, I love the fit of this pattern. I usually shy away from raglan sleeve patterns because there is too much bulk through the shoulders for me. That’s not the case with this one. A perfect fit!

It’s fun to be creative and make the same pattern in two different ways to give each its own identity. I feel chic and comfortable in both of my Tulip Tops…I’ll be making more of these for sure!
