Oh my – I think I need to get my hands on some quilted knit fabric STAT! Check out Erin’s Tulip Top today.
Hi! Erin from Sewbon here today to share with you my latest make, a quilted knit Tulip Top!
I picked up 2 meters of this amazing quilted knit fabric last month from Blackbird Fabrics (sadly, it’s sold out now or I would buy IT ALL!) and I had been debating what to do with it. After seeing some cozy looking cardigans and sweaters at Lululemon, I decided that this fabric needed to become something unique and stylish. Something that I could wear running errands, after a yoga class, or with heels for a more “I Actually Tried” look. Enter the Tulip Top pattern.
I cut the medium size (which is 3 inches larger than my bust measurement) to make it slouchy and I lengthened the top by 3 inches so it would cover my rear. I’m a firm believer that leggings are pants, but I still like to cover my butt. I also lowered the neckline by 1 inch just because it felt a little high to me and I omitted the cuffs and lengthened the sleeves to make up for that.
I pretty much made the top according to the instructions, but bound the neck and hem with a knit binding. To finish the sleeves, I just turned them under and stitched.
I usually have to take the arms in quite a bit on long sleeve patterns because I have noodle arms and I think it would have been more efficient to have done that prior to sewing them to the shirt. Due to the unique construction of the crossover front, it’s harder to change the fit once it’s sewn together. But, I did zip the arms through the serger, taking off about 3 inches from the biceps to about 1.5 inches at the wrists.
Overall, I’m really pleased with how this top turned out. Andy actually said it’s one of my best makes yet… although he says that after every project. 🙂
Oh, and if you are interested in making the gold leather tote bag I’m carrying in these pictures, I would love it if you checked out the tutorial HERE on my blog!
