Last week Ren shared a perfect Zippy Jacket, this week Melissa is showing off the ladies version of the pattern, the Zinnia Jacket. I am in love with her trim – what a perfect way to use knit scraps!
Hey everybody! It’s Melissa Q. from a happy stitch and I’m so happy to be back on Melly’s blog. I’ve sewn up a super snuggly Zinnia Jacket because it is snuggly, sweatshirt season.
Like so many Blank Slate patterns, the Zinnia Jacket is a closet staple with just a little something extra. Of course, by making it myself I’m able to take a basic, well-designed item, the zip-up sweatshirt, and add something interesting. I had the perfect fabric to do just that. The heathered grey sweatshirt material is a french terry fabric (bought at Mood Fabrics), which makes it extra cozy.
The fabric on the pocket binding and the cuffs is the modern jersey fabric from Spoonflower in a crazy hot pink and mustard flower print from Holli Zollinger. I’m super into neon pink these days. It always strikes me as the perfect little pop of color against neutrals. I especially like how the bold pattern of this fabric mixes and matches against the grey.
I’m pretty proud of this sweatshirt, as intimidating as a big, heavy metal zipper is it came together with ease. I was surprised at how simple the pattern made it happen. I also learned a whole new technique for adding cuffs that is life-changing! Here I’ve been struggling to put them around the free arm. Melly walks through the easy way…I will never do it differently again.
I did use my serger just to close up the seams because the french terry fabric does a lot of shedding but you wouldn’t have to, hopefully your fabric isn’t a crazy shedding machine like mine!
Next I want to lengthen the Zinnia Jacket to tunic length and add a hood so I can slip it on over leggings for those extra snuggly days.
