Hello again, MellySews readers! It’s Dixie from Dixie DIY here to share with you my new Marigold Dress.
I've made this pattern once before (the peplum top version) so the dress came together pretty quickly this time.
The fabric is a cotton from Cotton & Steel. It's not quite a stripe but I still tried to match the print at the side seams as well as arrange the blank white space areas in some place that didn't look odd.
I used some plain round, navy buttons from my stash.
But the coolest part of this dress, I think, is the hand top stitch detailing I did. Several months ago I bought some white sashiko thread which is a thick thread used in traditional Japanese embroidery, but I hadn't used it yet on any project.
Rather than let the thread sit in the drawer I brought it out and did a running stitch along the skirt and sleeve hems, around the pocket openings, on the yoke seams, and on the collar and button placket. Sashiko is typically done on indigo colored fabric so I thought it would go well with the navy blocks on my fabric.
It's just a little something extra that makes the dress special. Since the thread is white on mostly cream it's subtle from far away but up close it stands out. And since I've been doing a lot of hand sewing on various projects lately, making a simple running stitch didn't take me very long at all.
This is a cute, everyday dress that's still nice enough to wear to dinner or an event. I love the style and the elastic waist makes it comfortable. No darts or closures to sew makes it a fast project. Plus, usable pockets are always great to have on a dress.
