Hello, this is Lizzy from Handmade by Lizzy and I’m sharing my latest springy/summery make, the short-sleeved version of the Valetta Top (aff link) from Blank Slate Sewing Patterns! I sewed this top in a gorgeous white linen and hand embroidered the yoke for a fun detail. This breezy pullover top with tassels is so low maintenance and seems to go with just about everything in my wardrobe!
The tassels in this pattern inspired me to hand embroider the yoke, which called for a skein of embroidery thread to create. I used orange, pink, ivory and purple thread for the flowers (and green for the leaves) and then decided to incorporate all of those colors together for the tassel itself, which resulted in a fun multicolored accent to this top! Fyi, I added twice as many threads because I wanted it to really stand out, which I think did the trick!
I left the back yoke simple, as I felt the front had just the right amount of flair to make this top extra special.
Another favorite detail of this top is the curved hem, which I was a tad nervous about sewing up well, and I was very close to inserting bias tape instead of following the pattern instructions for hemming. But ultimately I decided to follow the instructions (baste 1/2 an inch all around, iron along the basted line, then turn in raw edge 1/4th an inch and sew), and I am so happy I did. This was a breeze to hem and turned out really smooth!
I think you’ll be seeing a lot of this top in my me-made wardrobe (should you choose to follow along with my sewing adventures!). What are the makes that get you all ready for sunny weather? I’m usually a dress gal, but I couldn’t resist this sweet top for warm, sun-filled days!
